Capability maturity model

Capability Maturity Model(CMM) divides a company’s work with processes into five steps:

1. Initial – ad hoc based work; the knowledge is in the minds of key individuals.
2. Repetitive – the processes have some sort of documentation and the work is usually done in a similar way.
3. Defined – the processes are well documented and used in all different parts of the organization.
4. Managed – the work is measured and monitored.
5. Optimized – the measurements are used for continuous improvements. (Carnegie Mellon University, 1993)
